March 23, 2010 Measuring the patient experience can yield significant financial reward in your GP Practice

Delivering the best possible care for patients is at the heart of the GP quality incentive scheme - the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF).

We want to ensure that GP practices continue to deliver more improvements to patient care, and are better supported in keeping patients healthy.
UK Health Minister

Specific objectives of QOF reward GP practices for managing the patient experience at the surgery and the quality of
services offered. A commitment was made in High Quality Care for All, Lord Darzi’s review of the NHS, to develop a new,
independent and transparent process for prioritising QOF to ensure it continues to support GPs in their delivery of the best
possible care for patients.

In 2008/09 the Patient Experience Domain consisted of indicators such as:
• Length of consultations
• Provision of appointments
• Provision of patient surveys

These indicators are worth up to 146.5 points - 14.65% of the total. When one considers that each QOF point is worth on average £120, the advantages of measuring and monitoring patient experience is clear.
