June 24, 2011 Meet the Team - Simon Dean

In this second of our series of occasional articles introducing you to the team at CRT, we interview Simon Dean, our Technical Director.

When did you join CRT?
2nd November 2009

Simon Dean - CRT's Technical Director

What’s your background?
My background is almost all technical, with a bit of media interest thrown in. I have been working with computers since I got my first when I was 11 (and am now 38.) I have been a software engineer, implemented SAP systems across Europe, managed an IT department & been a consultant. I really do enjoy technology.

What’s it like to work for CRT?
It’s a dynamic, challenging, exciting environment.  There are great people here, which make working here a pleasure. Work is not without its tough times & challenges, but working with good friends on something I really believe in make it all worth it.

What part of your role do you most enjoy?
Looking to the future & creating a strategy for getting there. I love helping others to see the bigger picture and expand their perspective on what can be achieved. I also love solving problems and helping people see ways round situations & issues. The people element is key – focussing on technology, strategy & the future is great, but without people it’s a bit too pointless for me.

What’s currently your biggest challenge?
Not getting dragged into detail & the nitty gritty of the day-to-day, rather than the helicopter perspective.

What’s your favourite piece of technology? (Apart from ViewPoint RCS of course!)
My digital cameras – anything that uses technology to help you be creative.

What interests you?
Photography & movies – I love the arts, as I get older I enjoy and appreciate creative media more and more.

How do you spend your time outside work?
Mostly with my 5 children! Aged between 1 & 11 they always provide plenty for me to do. With a bit of spare time I like to watch films & very occasionally create them.

What’s your pet hate?
People who say they hate something when they’ve not even tried it.

What’s your favourite smell?
The smell when it’s just rained after a dry spell.

If you could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
Materialism – people are so much more valuable, and yet we’re so tied up with ‘stuff’. What we spend on lunch here (Say £2) is over a day’s wages in many parts of the world.
