Patient Participation Directed Enhanced Service (DES)
A two-year patient engagement exercise that runs until 31 March 2013, is calling on GPs and Primary Care Trusts in England to consult widely with patients about the services they offer – and the standards of care they deliver.

But where does a GP practice turn to in order to fulfil its ‘engagement obligations’?
CRT and Ipsos MORI are healthcare experts with a long track record in helping GPs and the NHS deliver a wide range of enhanced and cost-effective engagement projects. For example, in 2010, CRT worked with the Department of Health to produce A Best Practice Guide to Using Real-time Patient Feedback. This guide is widely used by health professionals.
Today, our tailored solutions continue to help GPs:
• Identify the most important local needs for all of your patients;
• Improve overall practice performance;
• Achieve budgetary savings and internal efficiencies;
• Enable practice staff to devote more time to the delivery of excellent patient care.

Patient engagement: the GP challenge
The launch of the two-year Patient Participation Directed Enhanced Service (DES) on 1 April 2011 – effective until 31 March 2013 – gives a framework to GPs and Primary Care Trusts to be able to consult more effectively, and put patients at the heart of decision-making about the range and quality of services provided.
As part of this process, the NHS is seeking to encourage and reward GP practices for routinely asking for and acting upon the views of their patients. This includes patients being involved in decisions that lead to changes to the services their practice provides or commissions, either directly or in its capacity as gatekeeper to other services.
The DES aims to promote the proactive engagement of patients through the use of effective Patient Reference Groups (PRGs) and to seek views from practice patients through the use of a local practice survey. The outcomes of the engagement and the views of patients are to be published on the practice website.
